Dow Corning, a global leader in silicones, silicon-based technology and innovation, introduced here today at MD&M West (Booth #2127), a breakthrough new family of silicone pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) that solve skin issues commonly associated with acrylics. The new Dow Corning® MG-2XXX Series of four PSAs provides strong (shear force of 21kg), conformable adherence of medical devices over extended wear periods without irritating or sensitizing the skin. The PSAs also offer excellent permeability to gas and water vapor, making them well suited for medical applications in which increased aeration is required. Dow Corning is exhibiting the new high-performance adhesives at its booth, along with its expanding portfolio of leading-edge silicone technologies, to showcase how the company is giving customers new possibilities for designing innovative medical devices.

“Our new Dow Corning MG Series complements and extends our industry-leading portfolio of medical device adhesives, offering customers unparalleled choice in properties and performance,” said Gary Lord, global strategic marketing director for Healthcare at Dow Corning. “Our proven silicone chemistry can help increase patient comfort and protection by overcoming drawbacks of traditional adhesive materials. These unique formulations will help manufacturers create the next generation of medical device technologies.”

The new PSAs are suitable for use in medical device applications requiring secure adhesion to the skin, such as ostomy appliances, monitoring devices, surgical dressings and drapes, hairpieces and external prosthetic devices. They are available in a range of tack and peel adhesion values, solvent types and solid contents to meet specific application needs and processing parameters. All four grades have successfully passed biocompatibility testing for cytotoxicity, skin irritation and skin sensitization according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations for non-clinical lab studies (21CFR58).

Dow Corning MG-2402 and MG-2502 Silicone Pressure Sensitive Adhesives can be processed using conventional roll coating equipment for solvent-based systems. While, Dow Corning MG-2410 Silicone Pressure Sensitive Adhesive can be applied using conventional hot melt coating equipment and the Dow Corning MG-2401 grade is designed to be used in applications where the liquid adhesive is brushed or sprayed onto the skin.

With more than 60 years of experience developing and commercializing silicone materials for healthcare applications, Dow Corning helps customers innovate in medical device design and manufacturing with silicone elastomers, liquid silicone rubbers, adhesives and tubing, building on scientific know-how coupled with global market and regulatory experience.
