Proto Labs manufactures custom parts for a global-base of designers and engineers through three distinct services: 3D printing, CNC machining and injection molding. Our proprietary software and automated manufacturing processes allow for quick-turn prototyping and low-volume production of real plastic, metal and liquid silicone rubber parts in 1 to 15 days.
Product developers can upload a 3D CAD model online and receive an interactive quote with design feedback and pricing information within hours. The manufacturability analysis helps customers eliminate potential problems like sink or walls that are too thin or thick. Once a part design is ready and a quote approved, production begins.
Our CNC machining process uses three-axis milling and turning with live tooling to machine up to 200 parts from more than 30 stocked plastic and metal materials. The result is functional parts made from real metal and plastic materials for prototype testing; jigs and fixtures; and functional end-use parts.
Our 3d printing processes employ the latest 3D printing technologies to provide precision accuracy to part production — from small pieces with complex geometries to large, highly detailed patterns. We have a range of high-performance materials that are ideal for concept models, form and fit testing, and functional end-use parts.
For customers who need low-volume production or bridge tooling, Proto Labs’ injection molding can manufacture up to 10,000+ parts from hundreds of different engineering-grade plastic and liquid silicone rubber materials.
The root of Proto Labs’ process automation lies within our interactive quoting. Our automated system accepts customers’ 3D CAD models and returns a detailed interactive quote within hours that contains free manufacturability analysis on parts as well as real-time pricing information that adjusts to quantity, material and turnaround time modifications. The design analysis addresses any potential molding and machining issues upfront, before production begins, allowing for quick iterations that save time and money. Once a design is ready and a customer submits an order, parts can be completed and shipped in one to 15 days.
Proto Labs is focused on providing product designers and engineers with fast, reliable and inexpensive ways to obtain low volumes of parts based on their 3D CAD design. Proto Labs began in 1999 as The ProtoMold Company, which specialized in the quick-turn manufacturing of custom plastic injection -molded parts. In 2007, the company introduced its CNC machining service, and soon after changed the corporate name to Proto Labs, Inc. Since that time, Proto Labs has opened facilities in Japan (2009) and Europe (2011), gone public on the New York Stock Exchange (2012) and added rapid additive manufacturing as a third flagship service.
