Manufacturer of laser marking and engraving solutions for the Medical Device Industry

FOBA is among the leaders in manufacturing and supplying laser systems and workstations for identifying, marking and engraving ( FOBA marking lasers mark a variety of materials and parts in the Medical Industry – in particular various plastic and metal devices – but also in many other markets such as Electronics, Automotive, Plastics, Safety and ID. FOBA laser marking and engraving workstations are especially applied in the Medical Technology Industry for marking medical devices such as medical/surgical instruments and implants. FOBA laser marking solutions support medical devices producers that have to comply with legal regulations (UDI), and are obliged to apply all ID marks reliably and with repeat accuracy. To properly identify a part, it is essential to properly mark it: FOBA offers a unique closed loop laser marking solution.

As part of ALLTEC GmbH, FOBA serves as a sales channel for laser part marking and engraving. The product line ranges from OEM marking lasers for integration into production systems and lines to stand-alone laser marking workstations and highly-precise laser engraving machines. In addition to that, FOBA offers various laser technologies and value-adding accessories and options such as vision systems with patented features such as fixtureless marking.

Applications in the Medical Industry

Thanks to the varied range of different wavelengths, performance categories and pulse widths that FOBA offers, nearly every material can be applied with reliable, plain and permanent markings that comply with the strict hygiene requirements and legal regulations the medical device producers have to stick to. The laser markings on materials such as stainless steel, titanium, silver, ceramics or various plastics are easily readable and traceable even after centuple sterilizations. Medical devices are laser marked contact-free, clean, without the aid of inks or solvents and have absolutely plain surfaces that prevent germs from sticking on them. include the laser marking and engraving of:

  • surgical and dental instruments
  • implants such as bone plates, bone screws, hips and artificial joints
  • medical plastics and devices such as catheters or insulin pumps
Quality assurance and traceability

The high-quality laser marks applied with FOBA laser technology are perfect for internal and external quality assurance and traceability tests which play a major role in the Medical Industry. For instance, individually manufactured implants are laser marked with individual 2D codes. Prior to implanting, these 2D codes can be used for checking that the one and only implant for the respective patient is used. Or a laser marked 2D code that lasts a lifetime can be used for tracing the part and distinguishing it from illegal copies. Such code and traceability options like the marking of a part number as 2D code, the application of consecutive numberings as bar or 2D codes or applying logos or measuring marks of graphics are integrated in FOBA’s high-performance laser marking software MarkUS. Additionally, the use of the vision system FOBA IMP (Intelligent Mark Positioning) ensures that only correct codes are marked on the correct parts and on the correct position of the part. The patented mark alignment and verification system IMP automatically detects the position of a device and aligns the marking/engraving content precisely as required. Optical verification is used to verify both laser marking content and position. Product waste and quality issues are reduced to a minimum and a reliable high-precision production process – without expensive production stops and time-consuming trial-and-error processes – is ensured.

Innovative marking of medical plastics

FOBA’s is the ideal solution for the marking of medical plastics, most sensitive products such as catheters or invasive devices such as cannulas or insulin pumps that need to be sterilized. The so called cold laser markings produced by the ultraviolet laser marker meet the requirements for strict hygiene and invasive applications. V.0020-uv works with minimum heat and colorizes the material’s surface only photo-chemically instead of foaming it. It achieves high-contrast and easily readable marks but the material’s surface remains plain and damage-free. Germs are hindered from sticking onto the material, and material substances are prevented from finding their way into the human body. Even previously un-markable materials such as white polyamides or silicones can be laser-marked with FOBA’s V.0020-uv.
