Nelson Laboratories opens new analytical chemistry lab, expanding its in-house service offering to include additional analytical instrumentation capabilities like chemical characterization testing of medical devices, qualitative and quantitative analysis of metals, qualitative and quantitative analysis of volatile, semi-volatile, and non-volatile organic compounds, and determination of leachable and extractable compounds.

Veteran microbiology lab, Nelson Laboratories (www.nelsonlabs.com), opened a new dedicated analytical chemistry laboratory this week, in preparation for expanding its in-house service offering to include additional analytical capabilities. This newly renovated space, named Redwood 5, is located across from their main campus, adding an additional 3700 square feet to their already impressive 128,000 square foot facility.

Redwood 5 will house three chemistry labs containing a number of different analytical instruments. This expansion will allow Nelson Labs to perform a variety of new analytical chemistry testing procedures including:

- Chemical characterization
- Qualitative and quantitative analysis of metals
- Qualitative and quantitative analysis of volatile, semi-volatile, and non-volatile organic compounds
- Determination of leachable and extractable compounds

Today’s ribbon cutting ceremony is just the beginning for Nelson Labs’ expanded analytical offering,” said Jeffery Nelson, Nelson Laboratories President/CEO. “The first piece of new equipment, the ICP/MS, has been installed and is being validated; it will be ready for use in the coming months. We will be adding more instruments throughout the year and each will undergo our rigorous validation process. We anticipate that we’ll be able to provide full materials characterization services by year end. We know our customers need this service to support their product submissions, so we’re excited to be adding it with a full good laboratory practice (GLP) option under our trusted quality system.”

Jayson Demke, Nelson Labs’ Chemistry Section Leader notes, “Nelson Labs is dedicated to being in the forefront with industry trends and standards. This new laboratory and its advanced equipment will allow us to provide our clientele access to the most up-to-date techniques used in the industry.”

Nelson Laboratories has traditionally subcontracted chemical characterization testing, but this expansion will allow them to begin performing nearly all chemical characterization testing on-site, adding to their existing chemistry testing expertise in total organic carbon, FTIR, differential scanning calorimetry, UV/Vis spectroscopy, gravimetric analysis, physicochemical testing, and gas chromatography.
