Hydrophilic coatings for Medical Devices

 

Biocoat, Inc. develops and manufactures hydrophilic coatings that are lubricious, durable and biocompatible for medical devices such as Catheters, Microcatheters, Guidewires, Introducer sheaths etc., designed for minimally invasive procedures. Our coatings are hydrogel in nature that swells on hydration to exhibit lubricity and are based on Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring and therefore an inherently biocompatible polysaccharide.  

 

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid also known as Hyaluronan or Hyaluronate is a polysaccharide occurring naturally throughout the human body. Its main function in the body is, among other things, to bind water and to lubricate movable parts of the body, such as, joints and muscles and resist compression. It has been used in the healthcare industry for decades and due to its supreme biocompatibility is the preferred hydrogel for numerous applications.

Biocoat’s coating employs hyaluronic acid’s natural properties to provide surfaces that are extremely lubricious with low co-efficient of friction. Several studies have shown that Hyaluronic acid breaks down fairly rapidly in-Vivo, thereby reducing the concerns surrounding particulates generated during the procedure.

Bi-laminar technology   

Biocoat’s dip coating – heat cured technology is a two layer coating that is chemically crosslinked through isocyanate crosslinkage. The covalent bonding between the coating layers offers enhanced durability with low particulate count often required for demanding applications. Hyaluronic acid in the top coat swells on hydration which exhibits hydrogel behavior providing a coating layer that is extremely lubricious.

Dip coating allows for a precise control of coating thickness that is typically measured at 2 to 5 microns in a dry state and heat cure allows for batch processing thereby maximizing your through-put with yields comparable or exceeding UV coating technology.
